I recently wrapped several architectural photography assignments, including new hospitality projects at ARIA in Las Vegas. Between commercial work, I also had the opportunity to photograph a beautiful residence in Honolulu, Hawaii. Although the settings were very different, both projects shared the same objective: capturing thoughtful architecture in a way that feels natural, inviting, and true to the original design.

One of my favorite images from that trip came from the Honolulu home, where the architecture and surrounding landscape complemented each other beautifully.

Great Architecture Follows the Same Principles

Whether photographing a luxury residence, a resort, or a commercial building, good architecture begins with the same foundation. Natural light, proportion, materials, and the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces all influence how people experience a building.

Professional architectural photography should preserve those qualities without distracting from the design itself. Every composition is chosen to emphasize balance, clean lines, and the way the space interacts with its surroundings.

Residential Photography Is About Lifestyle

Luxury homes are designed to be lived in, not simply admired. Photography should communicate that feeling by showing how rooms connect, how daylight fills the interior, and how exterior views become part of everyday life.

Unlike real estate photography, which often focuses on selling a property quickly, residential architectural photography is intended to document the architect’s vision and the craftsmanship behind the finished project. These images are frequently used by architects, builders, interior designers, and publications long after construction is complete.

One of the things I enjoy most about architectural photography is moving between different types of projects. A luxury residence, a resort, a restaurant, and a commercial building each serve a different purpose, but they all depend on thoughtful design and careful execution.

The photographer’s role remains the same: create images that faithfully represent the architecture while highlighting the details that make each project unique. Whether the assignment is in Las Vegas, Hawaii, or anywhere else, great photography begins with understanding the design before pressing the shutter.
