Here is an exterior photograph of the Windmill Library in Southwest Las Vegas, Nevada, designed by JMA Architecture Studios.

As an architectural photographer, I work on a variety of commercial and public buildings throughout Las Vegas. Projects like the Windmill Library are particularly interesting because they combine functional design with architecture intended to serve the surrounding community.

Exterior Architectural Photography for Public Buildings

Public buildings have different design requirements from hotels, private residences, and commercial developments.

Libraries, schools, and community facilities need to accommodate visitors while creating welcoming, accessible environments.

Their exterior architecture often communicates the building’s purpose before anyone enters.

For an architectural photographer, the challenge is to document these design decisions through carefully composed photographs.

The building’s overall form, materials, entrances, and relationship to the surrounding environment all contribute to how the architecture is perceived.

A successful exterior photograph should communicate those elements without distracting from the original design.

Photographing Architecture for Design Firms

Professional architectural photography is an important part of how architecture firms document completed projects.

For firms such as JMA Architecture Studios, photographs can serve as a visual record of their work and support portfolios, websites, presentations, and industry publications.

Unlike general real estate photography, architectural photography places greater emphasis on the architect’s design decisions.

Perspective, proportions, structural elements, and the relationship between different parts of the building are important considerations.

The goal is to create images that accurately represent the architecture while highlighting its most distinctive features.

This requires careful camera positioning and an understanding of how light interacts with building surfaces.

Light and Composition in Exterior Photography

Natural light can dramatically influence the appearance of a building.

Direct sunlight may emphasize structural details and create defined shadows. Softer light can reveal subtle differences in materials and finishes.

The direction of light also affects how the building’s form appears in photographs.

For commercial exterior photography, selecting the right viewpoint is equally important.

A wider composition can show how a building fits into its surroundings. A more focused image may emphasize a particular architectural feature.

Professional photographers often consider several viewpoints before deciding which compositions best communicate the design.

These decisions are especially important when creating images for an architect’s portfolio, where the photographs need to represent the completed project accurately.

Architectural Photography in Las Vegas

Although Las Vegas is best known for its hotels, casinos, and entertainment venues, the region also has an interesting collection of public and institutional architecture.

Libraries, educational facilities, and community buildings contribute to the city’s architectural character.

Photographing these projects provides an opportunity to document a different side of Las Vegas design.

The Windmill Library is one example of the architectural photography assignments I enjoy.

Whether photographing public buildings, commercial properties, or hospitality developments, my objective is to create professional images that communicate the architect’s work through thoughtful composition, accurate perspective, and carefully considered lighting.
